I believe authentic stories require authentic words. That’s why my novels are written in Australian English. This means that you might find an ‘s’ instead of a ‘z’ or one ‘l’ instead of two. Australian slang also plays a large part in some of these stories. You’ll find words such as ‘servo’ for a gas station (service station), ‘road train’ for long trucks, and ‘footy’ for Australian Rules football. Further reading may be required to fully comprehend the meaning of a word; however, context is generally given so that all readers understand what is happening in the story.
